It seems like everybody has a side hustle these days. But did you know that your side job could benefit more than just your pocketbook? The reasons people give for working multiple jobs are strongly related to how they evaluate their employment situation. Those who say they work various positions for some definite reason — they want to earn extra money; they enjoy, love, or are interested in what they do; or they see it as a hobby — are generally upbeat about their work. Sixty-four percent rate their job situation a seven or above, whereas those who work multiple jobs out of necessity view their work less favorably (41 percent rate their job a seven or above).
Overall, very few — just 2 percent — say they work multiple jobs because they can’t find a full-time job.
And while there are many different side jobs out there to choose from, “or even create,” there are some benefits that you might not have considered before you began your second job.
The Benefits of Having a Side Hustle
If you’re also doing something you love, it makes the job so much easier. There are so many side hustle success stories out there if you haven’t found your own yet, you are most likely in the minority. Here are a few reasons to start yours.
1. Full Ownership and Responsibility
That’s right; if you decide to become a solopeneur, you’re going to make yourself your boss. If you’ve found yourself a passion project and taken on the role of leader, you can experience a confidence boost like no other. Having the power and choice to direct your career in whichever direction you can be very empowering and liberating.
2. Self-awareness and Development
Along your solopeneur journey, you may discover different skills and strengths that you might never have known you had. Maybe you didn’t know that you were capable of designing an entire webpage. Perhaps you had no idea how to do the books for a company. Maybe you didn’t know how to type, etc. Starting a side-hustle creates many new opportunities for growth and discovery that you might not get in any other way. A new set of challenges and problems to solve can develop new solutions and skills you might not get otherwise.
3. Relieve Stress
If your side hustle is also a passion project, those few hours spent walking dogs or driving your Uber might be some of the best hours of your day. It probably beats your day job hands down. Allowing yourself to do something you love and get paid for it is a win-win situation.
4. Give You a Sense of Purpose
One of the great things about working for yourself is that you often get to talk to or meet your clients directly. While developing those relationships, you can get the opportunity to see how your work affects them and their business directly. It can be gratifying and fulfilling to see someone’s face light up because of a service or sound that you provided.
5. Bored? Not When You Have a Side Hustle
Having an assignment or something to do is an excellent cure for boredom, especially when you can make extra dough while doing it!
